Players are too sensitive! Metaphorical fantasy designers talk about how to alleviate frustration

Kenichi Goto, lead combat designer at Atlus, a well-known RPG developer, recently spoke to PC Gamer at GDC and said that today's gamers are sensitive to death because they often feel like their efforts have been in vain.

According to HowLongToBeat's statistics, the average playthrough time for Atlus' latest game, Metaphorical Fantasy, is 105.0 hours, and if a player chooses to challenge them all, the time will soar to 0 hours.

As a result, Goto has designed a generous autosave feature for players in the game, aiming to alleviate frustration after the player's death. "The feeling of having the player on the edge of Game Over at this moment is exactly what we're trying to bring to the table in a modern RPG." In addition, players can retrace the battle in Metaphorical Fantasy, retrying an unlimited number of times to find the best strategy.

Despite these facilitation mechanisms, Atlus maintains the high level of combat challenge. Goto said that the studio has always regarded RPGs as "resource management games", and hopes that players will allocate resources reasonably for combat and life simulation, rather than easily clearing levels. These changes not only improve the game's replayability, but also ensure an intense combat experience.
