According to a press release released by OpenAI on Thursday, paid ChatGPT Plus and Pro users will get a better conversational experience, thanks to improvements in ChatGPT's memory capabilities.
OpenAI says ChatGPT can now make better use of past conversations to "provide more relevant and useful responses." This means that new conversations can extract information from previous text, voice, or image conversations, making responses more personalized.
The user can control the new memory settings. The "Quote Saved Memories" feature remembers key information about the user, such as name or preferences. This information can be added to ChatGPT's memory when explicitly instructed by the user, or automatically saved when it deems certain information particularly useful.
"Reference chat history" is a more global setting that allows ChatGPT to review the context of past conversations to better align with the user's goals, interests, and tone. This allows ChatGPT to continuously adapt to the user's characteristics over time.
These settings can be turned on or off at any time. Users can also opt out of these features altogether, or switch to a temporary chat mode for a memory-free conversation.
While ChatGPT seems to be able to answer any question, have a meaningful conversation, or create anime-style personal portraits, it still has its limitations. Users who regularly use this AI chatbot sometimes experience memory limitations. This limitation can be troubling when dealing with particularly complex projects that require ChatGPT to quote past conversations.
This update is not just a delight for researchers. Interaction with AI chatbots has become so engaging that someone is starting to create AI boyfriends and girlfriends. The problem was that these AI companions would eventually run out of memory, essentially forgetting the conversations of the past few months and needing to be retrained. For some, this can be difficult to accept. With this update, AI companions can maintain their memories for a longer period of time before they need to be reset.
Prior to this update, ChatGPT had a token limit of 768,0. Token is roughly equivalent to four written characters. It is uncertain how many tokens will be limited after this update.
