Adobe will add AI assistant to Photoshop and Premiere Pro

Adobe is developing AI assistants for Photoshop and Premiere Pro that can not only recommend photo or video editing options for users, but also automate editing tasks, according to a blog post published today by Ely Greenfield, Chief Technology Officer of Digital Media at Adobe.

Photoshop's intelligent AI assistant, which Adobe calls "creative assistants," will be presented in the form of a new float panel. It analyzes the photo and recommends in-context editing suggestions. For example, it can suggest removing people from the background, or create a stronger depth-of-field effect by blurring the subject's background. The user simply clicks on the suggestion and the system will automatically execute it.

Long-time Photoshop users are accustomed to working with photos manually, with the tedious task of creating masks for people and objects, and then building layers to modify specific parts of the image individually. Adobe has added AI features such as expanding and filling photos on a larger canvas, or using the Distraction Removal feature to remove unwanted objects or people in the background.

Adobe's vision is to enable Photoshop users to interact with the assistant using natural language, making it easier to learn the steps needed to complete tasks (which, of course, can still do for you). Users can continuously send instructions to the assistant to make more modifications, or make manual adjustments in the layer. In an example video, when someone asks the bot to clean up the image and add a text box behind the person, the bot lists the following steps: remove the background person, auto-brighten, remove distractions, create a "host" layer, create a text layer, and organize the hierarchy.

For Premiere Pro, Adobe is expanding on the Media Intelligence capabilities introduced last week. This feature analyzes the objects and compositions in the video to help users find the desired shot. The future smart assistant will allow users to guide it through preliminary video editing.

"While AI can't replace human creative inspiration, with your input, it can make some informed guesses to help you kickstart your project," Greenfield wrote in his blog. It can also help you learn how to perform complex tasks with a few simple keystrokes, helping you grow into a better editor. "Premiere Pro's creative assistant will ultimately help editors optimize shot selection, adjust colors, mix sound, and more. Adobe has also just introduced Generative Extend, which uses AI to add seconds of content to video clips to help achieve better transitions.
