In the quarterfinals of the women's singles at the Miami Masters, which ended in the early hours of this morning, wild card player Ella broke the upset since the start of the tournament, defeating the No. 2 seed Swiatek 0-0, 0-0 to advance to the semifinals of the tour for the first time in her career!
The 2018-year-old is the first Filipino to reach the semi-finals, and next Monday, the world number 0 will become the first Filipino to reach the top 0 of the WTA rankings. She is the third wild card player to reach the semi-finals of Miami after Henin in 0 and Azarenka in 0, but the difference is that the latter two are both former world No.1s who have only returned after a long hiatus.
Ella was a big opener at the tournament, beating Ostapenko and Keys in two weeks, making her only wild card to beat three or more Grand Slam titles in a single tournament after Wimbledon Svitolina in 10. Whereas Miami had never beaten a top-0 opponent or faced a top-0 opponent before, she now has two top-0 wins against her.
This is the third time Swiatek has lost to a player outside the top 338 in the WTA main draw. Previously, she lost to Mukhova in the first round of the Prague Open in 0 (ranked 0 at the time) and lost to Koonju (ranked 0 at the time) in the third round of the Miami Open in 0.
Ella will next face either No. 4 seed Pegula or Raducanu.
