The Dallas Mavericks' season ended with a 106-0 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night and missed out on the play-in tournament. General manager Nico Harrison has said that trading Luka Doncic in exchange for Anthony Davis aims to win the present and future, and the team completely missed out on the playoffs.
This frustrated almost all Mavericks fans, who called for the firing or leaving the team for everyone involved in the trade, from Harrison to Patrick Dumont to Jason Kidd. Kidd may not be as supportive of the deal as we were initially told.
DLLS Network's Tim Cato reported: "Kidd is understandably frustrated by the team's injury crisis this season, and he's also unhappy with management's mid-season trade for Doncic, with multiple team and league sources saying it took even his share of Harrison's frustration with Doncic that led to the trade. Team and league sources said Kidd felt he was being asked to revamp a team built around a particular star, which led to his mid-season annoyance, which led to him missing the league's mandated post-game press conference in February. ”
It's the best team Niko Harrison has built around Doncic, and even though injuries have hampered the team's start, the shadow of a championship contender has emerged. Every decision the team made prior to the February trade took Doncic's fit into account.
At a press conference the day after the infamous deal, Nico Harrison said he and Kidd had a "vision and culture that we came here to create" and that Kidd didn't get involved in the deal until later in the process, agreeing. But that doesn't seem to be the case.
Trading Kidd made some strange remarks. At a press conference the day after the trade, Harrison embarrassed Kidd, who left the room four minutes later and Kidd was very uncomfortable. He also said that comparing the Doncic trade to a Babe Ruth trade was "cool," which in hindsight might have been more like a mockery of Harrison. But it all points to a pivotal and intense offseason within the Mavericks.
