This sudden move sparked a negative response among users. Software developer Simon Willison described the feature as "creepy and unnecessary," while another developer, Nick Dobos, said he "hated it." On social platform X, a large number of users expressed confusion and wariness of ChatGPT's behavior of calling me by name, with one user saying that "it feels like a teacher keeps calling my name, and I don't like that."

It's unclear when this change happened and whether it was related to ChatGPT's recently upgraded "memory" feature. This feature allows the chatbot to personalize responses with past conversations. However, some users said that ChatGPT would still call them by their first names even if the memory function and related personalization settings were disabled.

OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT, has yet to respond to this phenomenon. However, as of Friday, the change appears to have been reversed, and ChatGPT has reverted to its default "user" designation. (Sihan)
