OpenAI recently announced a major upgrade to ChatGPT's memory capabilities. Now, the chatbot remembers more information about you, making every conversation more personalized. However, this feature is not available to everyone, and there are a few caveats.
OpenAI shared a demo of the new feature on X, aka Twitter. Now, ChatGPT can "refer to all of your past chats" to provide more personalized responses. Previously, it could only remember part of the content, but now it can see every chat for future conversations.
In the demo, users asked ChatGPT to recall the weekend's chats. ChatGPT accurately recalled the two chats and confirmed that the conversations met the user's expectations. OpenAI says this will be helpful in things like writing, getting advice, and learning.
"The new conversation will naturally build on what it already knows about you, making the interaction smoother and more relevant to your needs," OpenAI said. ”
Not everyone is willing to have a chatbot remember that much information, though. You can choose to turn off the memory feature altogether, or just let ChatGPT remember previous chats. You can always ask ChatGPT what it knows and make changes. You can also choose to start the conversation from the beginning without mentioning the past.
Those who don't want to use ChatGPT memory at first will be automatically logged out of the new feature.
All Plus and Pro users will have access to the new memory feature, except for users in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, and Liechtenstein. Users of the Team, Enterprise, and Edu plans need to wait a few weeks to access the latest updates.
