In paid software, CrossOver runs Windows games on macOS; Among free software, Whisky (also known as WhiskyWine) is a popular choice. Based on Apple's Game Porting Toolkit (GPTK) and Wine compatibility layer, Whisky has successfully brought Windows games to the Mac platform.

IT Home quoted a blog post as saying,There are only 1 developers behind the Whisky tool, and one student is a student。 He posted a statement on his official website, announcing that he was abandoning the project due to "loss of interest".

The developer said that maintaining Whisky was time-consuming, and as a student, he was not paid to continue his passion, saying that if a future macOS upgrade caused the app to fail, there might be a small fix, but no long-term support.

The developers further noted that Whisky did not make a unique contribution to the Wine community. It's built on CrossOver, doesn't introduce significant innovations, and has limited value.

He even described Whisky's relationship with CrossOver as "parasitic," fearing that it could hurt CrossOver's profitability and Wine's growth on the Mac. In contrast, CrossOver has been upgraded to support DirectX 12 games, with more perfect functions, attracting more users.

Whisky's developers have moved on to new projects. He mentions that he is currently helping port the classic game Sonic Unleashed Recompiled to macOS and the Metal framework, indicating that he is still active in technical development, but has shifted his interest.
