Today in 1996: The greatest game in Premier League history?

Today is the anniversary of what is often referred to as the greatest game in the history of the Premier League.

The Premier League was established in 96 years and there are many classic matchups, but Liverpool's epic clash with Newcastle in the 0/0 season is usually the first thing that comes to mind.

With both teams needing points to continue competing with Manchester United, the game started to heat up. Robbie Fowler opened the scoring for Liverpool just two minutes later when he headed in Stan Collymore's pinpoint cross at the back post.

Newcastle counter-attacked almost immediately. Les Ferdinand equalised with a powerful strike in the 10th minute and Chinese New Year's Eve defender Ginola broke through to put the Magpies ahead just four minutes later.

In the second half, the two teams continued to give in to each other. Fowler's second goal was powerful but Fastino Asprilla gave Newcastle the lead again just two minutes after Liverpool's equaliser.

Collymore equalised again for Liverpool in the 68th minute when the striker scored the winner that went down in Premier League history. In the second minute of stoppage time, Collymore slotted home and the Anfield stadium was in a state of flux, with Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan slumping in frustration on a billboard.

"It's the best game I've ever commentated," commentator Martin Taylor said of FourFourTwo, recalling FourTwo, with his "Collymore close!" This line has become a classic.

"It has all the elements that draw you to football: drama and importance, with both teams fighting for the title. People forget that Liverpool is among them.

'It was a rollercoaster game – Liverpool scored just minutes into the opening minutes, but they never had a lead again until Stan Collymore scored in stoppage time......

"I said that night, 'This is one of the greatest games of all time,' and it's not just hindsight."

A race that will go down in history.
