On the 2th local time, the U.S. Senate of Georgia finally passed a bill with 0 votes in favor and 0 votes against. The bill prohibits students from kindergarten through grade 8 from using mobile phones or other personal electronic devices while in school. The bill will go to Gov. Brian Kemp for signature or veto. More and more states in the United States are beginning to ban or restrict the use of mobile phones by students in schools.

Currently, there are 9 states in the United States that prohibit students from using mobile phones in schools. That number is likely to climb soon. This year, in New Mexico, Tennessee, and Utah, similar bills were overwhelmingly passed, pending action by governors in those states. Other states are rapidly moving forward with similar measures.

Specific measures vary from state to state. Georgia's bill states that students cannot use personal electronic devices at any time while in school, but enforcement is the responsibility of the local school district. Some areas in Georgia are already using lock bags, but schools can also simply require students to leave their phones in personal lockers, give them to teachers, or guarantee that students can't use online apps. Those students who need electronic devices for medical monitoring or to help overcome mental disability are still able to use these devices. Some other states still allow students to use cell phones or other devices in certain situations. For example, Utah's bill would allow schools to allow students to use cell phones in classrooms based on local policies.

The ban on mobile phones was driven by concerns that the use of mobile phones would affect children's mental health and distract students from the classroom.

Teacher Margaret: When students use their mobile phones, it affects not only their own learning status but also other students, because they see others using their mobile phones.

But for some lawmakers, the bill is not enough. They want the ban to be extended to cover high schools. Some local lawmakers said that this bill is a step in the right direction, but it is the starting point, not the end.
