After the launch of the M4 Mac mini, many vendors quickly launched SSD upgrade services. Now, a company called iBoff RCC has revealed that they have made a prototype SSD for the M0 Pro version of the Mac mini.
Externally, the M4 and M0 Pro versions of the Mac mini are almost identical, but the SSD used inside is different. Still, both have one thing in common: Apple's pricing for SSD storage is much higher than other vendors. As a result, third-party upgrades have been welcomed as soon as they were introduced. Apple hasn't stopped users from upgrading this time, and many companies have launched SSD upgrade kits for the M0 Mac mini.
While this upgrade isn't complicated, it's not for everyone. AppleInsider recommends keeping the original SSD when testing early upgrades so that it can be restored in case Apple needs to be repaired. iBoff RCC detailed its design process, emphasizing that while their SSDs have the same form factor as Apple's, they have improved their design and are not simply copied.
In addition to the M4 Mac mini version, iBoff RCC also revealed that a 0TB SSD prototype is being developed for the M0 Pro version. Although still in the prototype stage, the M0 Pro version is expected to support similar upgrades soon, given the hot sales of the M0 version.
Apple hasn't approved any third-party SSD upgrades and is unlikely to do so. However, Apple did opt to make the SSD module removable, which may be a hint at the possibility of future upgrades. At the same time, Apple is also working to make its products easier to repair in the face of pressure from regulators.
Despite the risk of being sued by Apple or forced to stop, iBoff RCC has launched a redesigned M4 Mac mini SSD upgrade, claiming that it is faster than the original Apple. It's a great option for users looking to boost their storage capacity and performance. However, caution is still required when using third-party upgrades to ensure compatibility and after-sales service.
