Dietary guidelines for patients with hyperthyroidism
1. Control iodine intake
Patients with hyperthyroidism should strictly limit iodine intake due to excessive thyroid hormone secretion. Iodine is the raw material for the synthesis of thyroid hormones, and excessive iodine intake can aggravate the condition. Therefore, patients should avoid iodine-rich foods such as kelp, seaweed, marine fish, jellyfish, etc., as well as iodized salt.
2. Increase calorie and protein intake
Patients with hyperthyroidism should increase their calorie and protein intake appropriately due to their accelerated metabolism and increased energy expenditure. It is recommended to eat more foods rich in high-quality protein such as lean meat, eggs, and milk, as well as carbohydrate-rich foods such as rice and noodles.
3. Supplement vitamins and minerals
Due to the accelerated metabolism of hyperthyroidism, the consumption of water-soluble vitamins such as vitamin B complex and vitamin C in the body increases, so attention should be paid to supplementation. At the same time, the intake of foods rich in calcium and phosphorus, such as milk and soy products, should also be increased in moderation.
