Whether fasting examination is required for ultrasound depends on the location of the examination. If it is an abdominal organ, such as liver, gall bladder, pancreas, etc., it is generally recommended to have an empty stomach; In the case of gynecological or urinary organs, fasting is not required.
1. If you need to have an empty stomach
1. Liver: The liver is located in the right upper abdomen of the human body, which is the largest digestive gland in the human body and one of the organs in the body with metabolic functions. When patients have fatty liver and alcoholic hepatitis, it can lead to liver cell damage, resulting in elevated aminotransferases.
2. Bile: The main function of the gallbladder is to store and excrete bile, when the gallbladder is diseased, such as stones, inflammation, etc., it can be diagnosed by B-ultrasound examination. Because eating causes the gallbladder to contract, affecting bile drainage, it is usually recommended to perform the test on an empty stomach;
3. Pancreas: The pancreas mainly secretes pancreatic juice and participates in the digestion and absorption of food, if the pancreatic duct is blocked or the pancreatic tissue is necrosis, pancreatic abscess may be formed, resulting in acute pancreatitis. In such cases, ultrasound is also required to observe the pancreas for abnormalities, so it is recommended to perform the examination on an empty stomach.
2. There is no need for an empty stomach
For women, fasting is usually not necessary if ultrasound of the uterus and appendages is to be performed. This is because diet does not have a noticeable effect on these areas and does not interfere with the test results. For men, there is no need to fasting when performing ultrasound examination of the prostate and spermatic vein, and it is also not affected by diet.
For diseases of the urinary system, such as kidneys, ureters, bladder, etc., ultrasound can also be performed, but fasting is generally not required. Whether or not fasting is required depends on the location of the examination.
